This is a fun, creative assignment where students create a recipe-style poem based on objects and moments from their own lives. It is adaptable to almost any type of classroom, from simpler poems that could be created in elementary school classes to more complex poems that could be created in secondary classrooms.
I have used this assignment as an ice-breaker in my Senior English class for many years and it is always a hit with students. Although it seems simple, students often learn new things about themselves when they distill who they are into a list of ingredients and then a recipe. Students also learn more about each other, and about using sensory details to create evocative images.
