When I did this with my 10th graders, they were more motivated to solve math problems than I have ever seen from them! Chemistry math can be repetitive and boring, but students really need to practice over and over until it comes easy to them. This is a fun way for students to practice calculating empirical and molecular formulas and mole-gram-particle conversions all in one activity. Students must determine the formulas for the ingredients in a treat given percent composition data, then do some conversions to calculate amounts of each ingredient needed. At the end, I trade them their work for a cookie! Keys and teacher notes as to how I use this in my classroom are provided.
