With this strategy, teachers model the correct use of punctuation with an excerpted piece of text.
How is it done?
1. Teacher excerpts a passage from a book and retypes it with no punctuation. The sheet is given to the student.
2. Teacher reads the excerpt with expression according to the punctuation.
3. Student follows along marking the appropriate punctuation
4. Discussion ensues
5. Roles are reversed (student reads and the teacher marks)
This strategy can also be used with student pairs as appropriate.
