Literature Circle/Reciprocal Teaching Conversation Starter Cards to Create Learning Communities in Your Classroom for All Students (General Ed, ELLS, Special Ed, Gifted):
It is well worth the time and initial awkwardness that may occur when we first model, teach, then allow students to practice effectively implementing their individual roles for Reciprocal Teaching/Literature Circles. It may take a full week to help students become comfortable with their roles, but it is well worth the effort!
Each small group of students should have one full set of cards. Each card has directions and sentence starters for ELLs or students who are not sure how to begin talking to the group to fulfill their roles. Discussion Directors read passage, then get their group started and moving in their roles. After the first passage is read and discussed students should swap roles, passing cards clockwise to their neighbor so that all experience the various roles/strategies.
