Pre-requisite: a good understanding of what a Chinese radical is and the basic stroke order and meaning of each nature Chinese radical
This product supports students in recognizing and practicing writing basic Chinese radicals related to nature - water 水, fire 火, soil 土, mountain 山, rock 石 and a short exercise of designing your own ancient Chinese radical
Each radical exercise takes up half a page, part (a) requires students to circle the characters that involve the radical in a specific color; part (b) requires students to trace the radical in each character with the specific color used in part (a) and the rest of the character in lead pencil
This way, students can practice recognizing the basic Chinese radicals and writing it in the correct stroke order
** Students should aim to circle and trace the Chinese character as neat as possible. Generally, 1 page of this radical work takes about 5-10 minutes for Year 4 students.
** Always model how you would like the work to be done to outline your expectations and ensure students understand what they need to do
Page 3 second half page - allows students to design their own ancient radical. There is not right or wrong way to do so, just let them have fun! However, I do suggest to brainstorm as a class and invite some students up to the board to demonstrate first - this way, it encourages quality designs.
Page 4 - students need to go back to previous pages to search and find Chinese characters that have specific radicals - it is suggested that you model to students where they can look for the characters and choose character with less strokes if it's too hard for them
