Thanksgiving Cartoon Analysis for Reconstruction & the Civil War
This worksheet features Thomas Nast's Reconstruction-era cartoon "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner", and introduction that explains the setting and background, and 10 analysis questions students answer.
Nast's cartoon was published in November, 1869 and was intended to support the 15th Amendment to the Constitution and promote equality and universal suffrage. It is a wonderful image of an ideal America that still resonates today.
The questions have students think critically about the image and the time period and are a good mix of simple to more complex.
An editable Google Docs version of the activity and an answer key are provided as well.
