Product Description
Objective: In this lesson the students will closely examine primary documents during reconstruction. After this close examination, the students will employ critical thinking skills to demonstrate their understanding of reconstruction. The students will demonstrate their understanding during class discussions and a presentation.

Introduction: The purpose of this assignment is to illustrate to students how confusing the term “Reconstruction” is. While it is a good term to help generate a rather scattered era of American history, it is important that student understand the flaws of the term. This activity will allow your students to see that definitions are often not absolute when it comes to human beings. Each of the people, events, and laws, below were considered part of reconstruction, and each represents their own view of what “Reconstruction” really was.

2. Handout # 2: Defining Reconstruction with 8 primary documents
3. Handout # 3: Alabama Literacy Test and questions
4. Handout #4: Harper’s Weekly, White Supremacy Cartoon with SOAP Document Analysis
