This group project puts students in the place of the President and his/her cabinet members and helps them think critically about the deep issues that the United States dealt with following the Civil War.
Students work in President and Cabinet groups to write Reconstruction Plans for the United States following the Civil War. Students will address 5 key Reconstruction issues in their written plans.
I use this activity before starting my Reconstruction unit. When we actually start studying Reconstruction, students compare and contrast their Reconstruction plans with the actual plans of President Lincoln, President Johnson, and Congress.
This download contains an individual brainstorming handout, a group directions handout with grading rubric, and a “Presidential Cabinet Meeting in Session” door sign to add to the official atmosphere of your classroom and to get students interested from the time that they walk through your door.
