CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW!

Each of the 9 stations has 1-3 accompanying questions on the student handout.

After viewing all of the stations and completing the handout, students answer 3 summarizing questions to demonstrate their understanding of major concepts from Reconstruction.

Topics covered in the 9 stations:

  • Reconstruction Amendments (13th, 14th, 15th)
  • Plessy v. Ferguson
  • Freedmen's Bureau (Its purpose & its opposition)
  • Jim Crow laws
  • KKK and white supremacist violence
  • Disenfranchisement (poll tax, literacy test, grandfather clause)

I created this activity to use in an Honors American History course. It combines a mixture of primary and secondary sources, as well as political cartoons. These documents give students a deeper look into the failures of Reconstruction and its lasting effects.

This activity is particularly helpful in helping students understand the rampant racism and political violence faced by African Americans following the end of the Civil War.

Options for stations activity:

  • Hang up around room and get students moving (Laminate and reuse!)
  • Have students access electronically
  • Complete as a teacher-led, whole class activity
  • Students work in small groups and complete these as a packet
