This study guide is designed to be used with my Reconstruction Test. I used to have my students complete a study guide. I realized that my struggling students who needed the most help, were simply not studying. I created a completed study guide for each unit just to see how it would impact student performance. The results were phenomenal. Parents loved the completed study guides, because they now knew exactly what they needed to study with their child. Kids performed higher, because even my very unorganized students now had a full set of notes to study from. In addition, it freed up class time, to work on more authentic learning activities.

This study guide is also fantastic for new teachers or teachers new to this content, because it provides a summary of what should be taught in regards to each standard. The study guide is not meant to be exhaustive. It provides a brief overview of what should be covered with each standard. This guide is also a great resource for test preparation at the end of the year.

The study guide is designed to cover the 5th Grade Georgia Performance standards listed below but would be applicable for any upper elementary teacher teaching a unit on Reconstruction.

SS5H1e Describe the effects of the war on the North and South
SS5H2 The student will analyze the effects of the Reconstruction on American life
a. Describe the purpose of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments.
b. Explain the work of the Freedman’s Bureau.
c. Explain how slavery was replaced by sharecropping and how African-Americans were prevented from exercising their newly won rights; include a discussion of Jim Crow Laws and customs.
SS5CG2 The student will explain the process by which amendments to the U.S. Constitution are made.
a. Explain the amendment process outlined in the Constitution.
b. Describe the purpose for the amendment process.
SS5CG3b Explain how voting rights were protected by the 15th amendment.
SS5G2a Identify and explain the factors influencing industrial location in the United States after the Civil War.
