This packet includes a POWERPOINT & A FILL-IN-THE-BLANK VERSION of the PowerPoint for when students are absent or if you want them to follow along with you as you teach the unit.
This is a unit about Reconstruction that can easily be split up into 6-8 segments for students. You literally start on the first slide and work your way through the entire Reconstruction unit. This PowerPoint follows the support document for all Reconstruction standards in 5th grade, but the standards overlap in most states!
It has clip art, primary documents, color-coded words and phrases to help students remember the information. It also uses application of Thinking Maps throughout the unit. Review activities & videos are throughout the PPT. Review activities include matching, creating acronyms, answering questions, turn & talk questioning, & quick writes.
It is easy for the students to understand, so you could post it on your webpage for students to look over and study at night.
The Reconstruction Unit – Grade 5 consists of 2 PowerPoints, along with 2 PDF versions.
*****1. The first PowerPoint is in color with all the information, like a normal unit’s PowerPoint.
*****2. The second PowerPoint is a black-and-white FILL-IN-THE-BLANK PowerPoint that I print out when students are absent. I print 4 slides to a page, and they have to go through the PowerPoint (either in class or at home for homework) to complete the fill-in-the-blanks in order to catch up.
*****I also have included a PDF version of both, just in case the fonts are not downloaded on your computer.
The following SC standards that this unit covers are below:
Standard 5-1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of Reconstruction and its impact on the United States.
5-1.1 Summarize the aims and course of Reconstruction, including the effects of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Southern resistance to the rights of freedmen, and the agenda of Radical Republican.
5-1.2 Explain the effects of Reconstruction, including new rights under the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments; the actions of the Freedmen’s Bureau; and the move from a plantation system to sharecropping.
5-1.3 Explain the purpose and motivations of subversive groups during Reconstruction and their rise to power after the withdrawal of federal troops from the South.
5-1.4 Compare the political, economic and social effects of Reconstruction on different populations in the South and in other regions of the United States.
All of the above is in the PowerPoint.
***Please note that this PowerPoint is not meant for one, long lecture. It is meant to be broken down among a two week unit. Also, it is editable, so you can make it your own. Feel free to change, add, or take away anything you choose.***
