This 20-question web quest focuses on South Carolina History; it uses a variety of local and national sources to examine the issues of Reconstruction. It is separated into five categories: New Found Freedom, Carpetbaggers and Scalawags, Restricting the Rights of the Freedmen, The Freedmen's Bureau, and Wade Hampton and the Red Shirts.
Sections contain multiple links to find the answers. Links take students to readings as well as maps.
In my class, I assign this as an in-classroom, partner activity. Working in partners, students typically complete the project within one sixty minute block, but some will need more time (pesky misbehavior!).
Students generally enjoy the independence this activity offers, and it is a great way to introduce the unit on Reconstruction. The websites are a great overview. Some are harder to read than others, but there is nothing that is beyond students who are at grade level. Students below grade level generally get extra attention, but with some guidance and a strong partner, they have generally experienced success.
This is based on South Carolina History Standards, but it can be used for anyone wishing to explore the Reconstruction Era.
There are three pages of questions and the answer key is six pages. The answer key is long because I included text evidence taken directly from the links that you can point to and read to your students.
