This worksheet allows students to use a primary source document to learn about Reconstruction through the letter of a recently freed slave to his former master.
The primary source document is written by Jourdan Anderson and he is writing a very sarcastic letter back to his former master who wants Jourdan to work for him again. This letter is shocking, sarcastic, and full of passion. This letter is a great way to get students interested in Reconstruction and to see freedom from the perspective of a former slave in 1865.
Students read the document and answer the questions on the worksheet. The worksheet includes 10 questions and has an answer sheet for the teacher. The worksheet can be used to generate classroom discussion or be used as homework. My students always enjoy reading this primary source and it helps them better understand the desires of African Americans at the start of Reconstruction.
