Writing Rubric for Recounts and Retells

A set of rubrics for students to use and teachers to assess against.
There are a set of instructions and papers to use with the six rubrics. When you confer with a student there is a clear set of goals and the next step is identified.
The student uses the space provided on the plan to draw a planning picture. Use a writing pencil to draw the picture, attempt to write and then come back to it when the writing is complete and add color. (Color can be black and white- it can look just as effective). Share picture story books, posters, photos and magazines to show the use of color, background and detail. WOW = Wonderful Outstanding Work!
The WOW planning picture must have detail, color and background. These three components will enable your student, as an early writer, to discuss what they would like to write about. The student can then attempt to write using invented spelling or the teacher can add a dictated sentence. The more detail added to the picture, the more detail in the recount. Use word walls, brainstorm charts and word lists to encourage them to write.
As early writers begin to write, they will progress through the rubric at their own pace. The number of flower icons means that more strategies are to be included in the next writing process. As the student becomes more confident they can use the prompts to self-assess, peer assess and then use skills as an editor/proof reader.
The writing can be done on the reverse side of the sheet or on the lines that are appropriate to your state/country.
I have included some examples of lined paper that you may want to use.
When these are used in conjunction with Daily 5 ‘Work on Writing’, students can begin to set their own leaning goals. The conferring process is made easier as you know exactly what the student needs to work on. Together, circle the next step/goal to work on.
