** 3 MAZES **
: Mazes help students work on their executive functioning skills, such as planning and brainstorming various strategies (e.g. starting from the beginning of the maze or working backwards from the end of maze). Fine motor control
: Mazes require students to control a pencil through the maze without hitting the black lines. Visual motor
: Mazes require students to use their eyes to scan the worksheet in order to find possible solutions. Scanning is a great skill used for reading and writing, as it is important to scan from the left side of the paper to the right side.
** 2 WORD SEARCH PUZZLES **
: When looking for specific words, students must recognize letter combinations. Word Recognition
: What looks obvious to an adult (find this word in a sea of words) is far more complicated to an emerging reader who is learning to tell the difference between a word that begins g-r-e-a- and a word that begins g-r-e-e. Pattern Recognition
: Pattern recognition is the brain’s ability to find order and create meaning from data around us.
** 1 SUDOKU PUZZLE **
: You have to be able to figure out things like “if this cell is a 3, then that cell over there can’t be a 3, etc.
** 1 CROSSWORD PUZZLE **
: Crossword puzzles are especially helpful with vocabulary retention for any subject because they challenge students to explore past experiences, recall recently learned information, and manipulate vocabularies to find the right word.
