The Arts Connect lessons integrate a variety of artistic means to engage students. Lesson One: Respect Yourself; Be Drug Free uses drama to influence positive choices through role play. The lesson objective is to help students decide ahead of time how they are going to handle the pressure to do unsafe and illegal activities. Students first examine refusal skills through role play, then collaborate in small groups to develop scenes based on positive choices. Materials include Respect Yourself embedded PowerPoint, Respect Yourself Activities task cards, How to Handle Peer Pressure handout, Storyboard planning sheet.
Science teachers will easily be able to fit this lesson into chemistry (how drugs interact with your brain’s chemistry) and life science (how drugs affect parts of the body, particularly the nervous system). Humanities teachers will find a good fit for reinforcing story elements and developing oral communication skills. Health teachers can incorporate the lesson into drug prevention units.
