In This Pack:
I have included letter headings and 3 styles of Red Words for your use. I know some people do not have access to color or do not want to use as much of it. It is still very important the students see the words in red to solidify that they do not follow the rules, so even the simplest design has them in red. These are the first 160 red words that Orton-Gillingham recommends teaching. There are more!
What are Red Words?
Red Words consist of 15% of our language. They are the words that cannot be phonetically sounded out. They do not follow the rules. I explicitly teach my students how to spell red words using the Orton-Gillingham method. This is a multi-sensory method of teaching.
I use the steps:
Trace the word 3 times with your finger.
Tap the word on your arm 3 times. (Hand not write with tapping from top to bottom as you say the letters, and then swiping the whole word at the end.)
Create a sentence with the red word
Writing the red word 3 times in red on your paper
After we have learned a Red Word it goes up on our Red Word wall. This is much like any other word wall. I constantly refer to the wall while they are learning the words to mastery.
