This zip file contains many different activities (67 pages of student handouts and 1 PowerPoint with a total of 61 slides) which can be used to compose a unit for chemistry students involving topics in Redox and Electrochemistry. Topics in this unit include determination of oxidation numbers, differences between oxidation and reduction, oxidizing and reducing agents, writing half reactions and net ionic equations, balancing redox reactions, using a replacement series to determine whether a reaction will occur, determination of the voltage of an electrochemical cell and using this data to determine if the reaction is spontaneous, comparison of different kinds of electrochemical cells and more.
A lab activity on the construction of a voltaic cell is contained within this package. This lab activity contains a virtual component which uses a computer animation to reinforce the associated concepts if the materials for the construction of the cell are not available.
While these lessons were originally designed to correlate to the performance indicators of the New York State Chemistry - Physical Setting curriculum, the components of this lesson may be easily used in other chemistry or physical science courses as well. The components this unit addresses in the NGSS Standards and Common Core Standards are indicated at the end of this description.
The components of this lesson package can easily be displayed to students using and LCD projector and may be readily modified into formats facilitating smartboard technology.
Most documents are included in both word docx as well as pdf format to allow editing for specific teacher needs.
