This PowerPoint is set up to introduce students to some key concepts about reducing algebraic fractions (rational expressions). They try a few simple problems and together you explore how they know what's right and wrong, and more importantly, why. Through this process we develop some procedures to simplify the tasks at hand, but also do so in a way that promotes their ability to find lowest common denominators, which of course, comes in the next chunk of material.
The notes for the PPT are annotated to guide you through how to facilitate the discussion and activities in the lesson.
This is a very tricky topic, but this lesson makes it much more approachable.
