Why “this” activity?
I recently noticed in my 7th & 8th graders summary writing, they struggle to recognize and eliminate redundant phrases. Rather than drill and kill with redundancy examples, I was hoping to find something they might enjoy while linking to a cultural reference. Since I teach in SW Missouri, country music is an easy link to make for my kids.
The song “Parked Out By The Lake” played on my favorite morning show, and I knew this would be how my kids could discuss redundancy and allusion within the context of country music.
What you will need for this lesson:
Listen here before you teach to help establish background (10 minutes total & totally enjoyable.)

Class Copies of “Determining Redundancy”
Link to the Music (I included both links incase your district restricts certain services)
I would recommend sharing this resource via Google Drive so that students can make a copy, edit and access the links easily. Though since not all districts are 1:1, I have included shortened URLs. You may want to check them prior to your students use to ensure they are still operational since occasional broken links do occur.
