This vocabulary center helps students practice using reference materials to figure out the meaning of words, learn how to use pronunciation guides, etc. Students can complete the activities on their own, making them perfect to give them as extra practice for a language arts center, but they can also be completed with the entire class.

Three activities are included:

1) Parts of a Dictionary - Students learn about the parts of a dictionary through a reference page, and then practice putting words in alphabetical order to the 3rd and 4th letter. Students also practice using guide words.

2) Pronunciation Guide - Students learn the basics of how to pronounce words using the pronunciation guide, and then read and write a poem using confusing words.

3) Word and Meaning Choice - Students learn that words can have multiple meanings and they must choose the appropriate one. Also, they must choose appropriate words from the thesaurus to fit the context. They practice this by answering questions and coloring a hidden picture.

4) Reference Material Task Cards - 16 task cards help students review what they learned in the previous three activities

5) Reference Materials Book - Students assemble a little book that contain abbreviated information from the other activities. They can keep this book and use it to help them remember reference materials.

Also included is a reference page that defines the purpose of a dictionary, glossary, and thesaurus.

This products meets CCSS.L.3.4d, CCSS.L.4.4c, and CCSS.L.5.4c.
