I created this 10-day unit to teach my 5th grade students about each type of reference material. My goal is for them to understand the difference between all of them, known when to select each for a given purpose, and how to use them. My PowerPoint Units are all-in-one; they are sectioned by days, with links to each day on the initial slide. Each day states the objective, contains teacher-directed information, and activities (such as directions to use related worksheets, links to web-games, and partner work). I love to have my kids come up to the SMART board as much as possible, and I strive to have at least one activity that uses this technology in each lesson. I also strive to teach kids in a variety of ways: from me, through their peers, discussions, games, and more. This PowerPoint is all you need for a 10-day unit that teaches and assess dictionaries, thesaurus, index, Internet Search, encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, glossaries, and table of contents. My students really enjoyed this unit, and I feel like this would be great to introduce in the 4th grade, as well. Please see my related lesson plans and worksheets that are used and referenced in this PowerPoint and email me if you have any questions.
