Reflection Discovery is a fun medieval themed activity that will have your students investigating what happens when a figure is reflected over the x-axis or the y-axis on a coordinate plane. Students will reflect points over the y axis as they complete a symmetrical Coat of Arms. Then they will compare the pre and post image points and make observations on what effect the reflection had on the coordinates. Afterwards they make a conjecture about reflecting a point over the x axis. This activity will definitely get your students off to a successful start in working with reflections. Also, your students will love coloring their completed Coat of Arms in their own creative, unique way. My 8th grade students always enjoy this activity.
Lines are taken to lines, and line segments to line segments of the same length.
Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
