When I found out that my third graders were going to be required to write a Reflective Narrative on the ACT Aspire test in the Spring, I went on the hunt for resources. Unfortunately, I found very few that addressed the needs of students in third grade and my time constraints. This unit can be completed in a little over one week, writing about 45 minutes each day.
It's important to know that this resources assists students in RESPONDING TO A PROMPT, as it is a resource to prepare students for testing in the Spring.
So, I created this resource that teaches students how to write a Reflective Narrative in 8 Easy Steps:
1. Understanding the Prompt / Question
2. Brainstorming Ideas
3. Making a Plan (which includes a Hook and BME)
4. Reflective Ending
5. Drafting (with Transitions and Drafting Paper)
6. Revising (with Details and Dialogue)
It also includes an originally written Reflective Narrative Model for students to color code and analyze. The Model helps teachers demonstrate the steps for students with less preparation.
Follow my store to see shorter and shorter versions of this resource as I continue to scaffold students as they whittle this process down to 30 minutes! Yikes! :)
My new Reflective Narrative Prompts
product is up and running. It provides 5 Reflective Narrative Prompts with heavy scaffolding in Prompt 1 then gradually releasing responsibility to students by Prompt 5 which is the "official" ACT Aspire Writing Exemplar. Check it out!
