Based off of Mr. Brown's Precepts in R.J. Palacio's young adult novel fiction novel Wonder this writing activity asks students to reflect on famous words of wisdom. Each month (August through May) students are given a famous quote as a precept and are asked to reflect on the quote. Where have they seen this at play in their own lives? What is the significance of the quote? Do they agree or disagree with the sentiment of the quote? Ultimately, students write a short reflective essay on the precept, usually due at the end of the month. The focus of the assignment is on the generation of original thoughts or ideas as students try to connect with the words. This is a great generator for classroom discussion! This zipped file includes the ten writing prompt handouts and ten designs depicting the quotes that could be printed and displayed in the classroom.
