This 7 page activity packet contains everything your students need to complete a Document Based Activity (using primary sources/secondary sources) on how the Catholic Church fought back against the Protestant Reformation (Counter-Reformation). Students will read primary/secondary documents that introduce them to the ideas of the Council of Trent, Inquisition, the Society of Jesus/Jesuits and the Index of Prohibited Books. Students will:
1) Read each primary/secondary source document (excerpt) to understand how the Catholic Church fought back against the spread of Protestantism.
2) While examining documents A-D, students can answer the Comprehension Check Questions, for each document, on paper or orally discuss with a partner.
3) Students will then complete their graphic organizers to record information that will answer the overall question: How did the Catholic Church fight back against the Reformation?
4) Students can then use their graphic organizers to write a response to the overall question on their own paper or orally discuss as a class (teacher choice).
