Use this lesson to introduce your class to the refugee crisis in Africa at the beginning of a unit of study on the region. A six page news article by Time for Kids explains what a refugee is, factors that lead to people becoming refugees, and the effects of the refugee crisis on the world. The student handout was created to accompany the reading and is broken into three tasks. First, students complete a graphic organizer of key vocabulary terms. Then, students answer 8 questions based on the article. The final activity challenges students to create a bar graph illustrating the countries of origin and number of refugees of the six highest countries affected by the problem in the world today.
Includes: News article, Student handout, and teacher answer key
This article and handout are also part of an entire 5E based lesson on refugees in Africa under "God Grew Tired of Us". You can find this complete lesson with materials on my TpT store.
