What do you do when students simply refuse to do their work? What if they waste your class period doodling in their notebook and then try to blame you when they get a bad grade on their assignment? Teach students the importance of taking responsibility for their own learning AND document your intervention by using "Refusal to Work" slips. As soon as you've given a student a warning or reminder and you see that he or she is still not working, simply lay one of these on their desk. Before the end of class, check back in with the student and ask for the completed form. Typically, not only will you get a completed form, but you will also have a student who is hard at work on their assignment ;)!
