A great way to begin the year of social studies is to focus on the Native Americans that occupied the land we have colonized. This way, students know who is present as our curriculum guides them from the East Coast settlements to the Westward Expansion. There is so much diversity amongst the unique tribes in each region that I chose a specific tribe in each region of the United States so small groups of students can become expects. This self-directed learning experience covers several Common Core standards that will engage students and will be leave you able to support students as the project gets going.
At the end of this project, your students will have created a class resource from which others can learn. Students that are now experts on a tribe can compare and contrast with their classmates.
This project follows the “GRAPES” of History method. GRAPES stands for geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics, and social structure. The guiding questions have been adapted to fit this topic given what resources are available to students.
