Registered Nurse to Rear Admiral, the biography of Alene Duerk. Alene was the first female in the US Navy to obtain the rank of Admiral and this presentation is her history. Her biography begins in Ohio where she lives as a until she attends Nursing School. When WWII breaks out, Alene joins the Navy as a nurse and serves on a hospital ship, the USS Benevolence, headed for Japan. Prisoners of War (POWs) are released and cared for on the hospital ship. After the war, Alene's career continues as a civilian nurse. However, she returns once again to the Navy due to the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam Conflict. Alene continues to rise in rank and serves in various naval hospitals around the world. She reaches the pinnacle of her career as the first woman to advance to the rank of Rear Admiral thus opening the door for other women and worthy of recognition, including on Veteran's Day.
