FREE Fact Find Extension Activity List
NOTE: There are two of the same puzzle included. The only thing different is the image on the sheet. I made one look more holiday like in case you wanted to use it around the holiday season. It also has more of a cartoon look about it.
I have marked this for grades 4-5, as some of the words in the sentences might be challenging for third graders. With assistance though, third graders may be fine.
This reindeer activity is perfect for winter, especially for December as you near the Christmas break.
This is not just any 'ole puzzle. It doesn't just include words. It includes facts about reindeer, otherwise known as caribou, that your students will enjoy reading. I call it a 'fact find'. Within each fact, a word (or words) is underlined. Those are the words the students will find in the puzzle. For example, one sentence says, "Both male and female caribou have antlers, but the antlers on males are much larger." The word 'antlers' is underlined and that is the word they will find.
In this reindeer themed word search puzzle, words are found forward, backward, up, down, and diagonal. I would consider it on the challenging side since students are looking for words in all directions and they will practice reading skills.
I use word searches to introduce vocabulary, or even just give it as morning work. They are perfect for a holiday themed activity They are also great to use in writing. Perfect for a sub, too.
There are many options for using this word search 'fact find'.
One option is to have students partner up and practice fluency. They can take turns reading the sentences. This can be used for a writing activity. Have them take the facts from the puzzle and turn them into a paragraph, changing out some of the words to make it their own. Use it as a reading homework assignment, too. Parents can work with their child to find the words. Feel free to be creative and use it in your classroom however you would like.
The reindeer/caribou themed words included in the word search are:
Santa (as in Santa referred to his deer as reindeer and not caribou)
