Book Companion Packet

for “Reindeer of the Year” book by Make Believe Ideas

Book: Reindeer of the Year by Rosie Greening and Stuart Lynch

Included:

•8 reindeer paper puppets (Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, Blitzen, Donder, Prancer, Vixen),

•Santa Clause paper puppet

•3 Trophy props (1stplace, 2ndplace, 3rdplace)

•Stage scene.

•Reindeer of the Year BALLOT (print one for each member in your group)

•Grid to place the reindeer puppets to help students remember what order the
reindeers appeared.

Preparation: (you will need cardstock, laminate sheets, wooden craft sticks)

•Print activity pages on cardstock. Laminate the pages.

•Cut out the reindeers, Santa, and trophy props.

•Adhere the props to wooden craft sticks with a glue gun.

That’s it!

How I use this packet:

After everything is prepped, I put everything in a sensory box (purely optional) that has
holiday-themed filler in it. As you read the story, select the character
involved and enact (student can do this; great to teach verbs!) what is happening in the story.

Use the stage scene as the backdrop.

(i.e., Have Dasher dashing around the stage scene & doing a loop-the-loop).

At the end of the story, hand each student a Reindeer of the Year ballot and have him/her

vote for a reindeer. Tally up the votes and announce a winner. Hand out the trophies.

(Note: I place the reindeer props, one by one, on the numbered grid, as I’m reading the story.
This makes the voting part more visual. I summarize who the contestants are and
what each did.)

Story retell: Have the students use the background scene and props to retell the whole

story.Book Companion Packet
