This 8 page lesson uses word problems and drawing pictures to help introduce dividing to your students by relating it to multiplication. It should be used at the beginning of your division unit. The lesson is broken into five sections. In Baltimore County, we call this a 5E lesson. Each "E" stands for a separate piece of learning throughout the lesson. The "5E's" are engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate. The evaluation piece of this lesson is broken into five questions. The questions included in the evaluation will ask your students to write out fact families for three numbers. They will also be asked to record related division number sentences to specific multiplication facts. The final question on this evaluation is a division word problem. Students will have to explain their thinking by answering specific questions and drawing pictures to arrive at their answer.
