Help your students review relative clauses in this fun Trashketball game! It makes teaching and learning grammar more engaging for you and your students. All that you need to play is the ability to project a PowerPoint presentation, a soft ball, dark tape, and a trash can. Although it’s optional, you may want to provide prizes for the winning team.
There are three rounds. In the first round, students write the adjective (relative) clauses. In round two, they write the clauses and underline the relative pronouns (or subordinating conjunctions), and finally in round three, they write the clauses, underline the pronouns, and write the nouns modified. The sentences in the rounds provide informational text on the attention-grabbing topic of tsunamis.
This PowerPoint presentation includes the following:
Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this activity motivates students further by tapping into their love of sports. Using heterogeneous groups to play a game with friendly competition is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success.
This activity makes excellent guided practice after instruction on adjective clauses. Then, consider following the game with independent practice to extend your students' learning.
