Have you ever noticed that certain environments (like the dentist’s office) make you feel stressed, while other environments (like a beautiful beach) make you feel calm? Well, you don’t need to go to the beach to achieve calm: your brain can transport you to peaceful environments just by using imagery. In these activities, you’ll use your five senses to help your mind travel to a safe, relaxing place. This technique teaches your brain that your body is safe and facilitates relaxation. These are great activities for both children and adults alike.
These activities support students to learn and practice the skill of imagery (they also allow for some relaxing mindful colouring in the process) . Once students become familiar with the technique they can be encouraged to use a blank piece of paper or even record their own scripts to listen to on their devices if they need to.
Why Teach Imagery:
Encouraging children and adults to use their positive imagination can help to improve mood and increase feelings of happiness and calm. We are wired to look for the negative things around us, so these imagery exercises can help to train the brain to focus on positive thoughts and feelings.
