Joshua began life in Egypt as a slave, under cruel Egyptian taskmasters, but he rose to be the leader of Israel through faithful obedience to God. Moses gave Hosea his new name: Joshua, “Yeshua,” which means "the Lord is Salvation." Before the Jews entered Canaan, Moses died and Joshua became his successor. The Israelites set about to conquer the land of Canaan, under the Lord's guidance. God said to Joshua, "Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9, NIV).

While serving Moses, Joshua was also learned much from the great leader. Joshua showed tremendous courage, despite the huge responsibility assigned to him. He was a brilliant military commander and prospered because he trusted God with every aspect of his life .Joshua suffered only one defeat. Before the Battle of Gibeon, Joshua failed to consult God as he always did. On this occasion, he entered a deceptive peace treaty with the people of Gibeon. God had forbidden Israel to make treaties with any people in Canaan. If Joshua had sought God's guidance first, he would not have made this mistake.

Some Bible scholars view Joshua as an Old Testament foreshadowing, of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah.
