During the time of Methuselah, the people revolted against God, and there prevailed a state of lawlessness, cruelty, and corruption that brought doom and destruction upon the world. Methuselah’s grandson Noah, was a righteous and pious man who was blameless among the people of his time. He was the only follower of God left on the earth. Repeatedly, in the account of Noah's life, we read, "Noah did everything just as God commanded."

The world became so evil that God decided to destroy the world by flood. God called Noah to build an ark for Noah’s family and anyone else who wanted to escape the great flood that would destroy the world. Finally, God gave them a last chance and ordered Noah to build an ark. Noah diligently accepted his calling and never wavered from it. Time passed and yet the people had not repented.

When the rain came, it fell for 40 days and 40 nights and the water which covered the earth rose higher and higher. It covered the peaks of the highest mountains. Every living thing died, and all growing things were destroyed. Once the Flood had passed, but it had changed the appearance of the earth and of the entire universe and the earth was barren and unyielding.
