This is a 19 slide, highly animated power point presentation on Religion – Key Figures - John the Baptist. Each of the slides are editable, so you can modify those to meet your individual needs.
John the Baptist was a Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the imminence of God’s Final Judgment and baptized those who repented in self-preparation for it. John was born in the countryside of Judaea, Palestine, near Jerusalem and died by execution at the hands of Herod Antipas around 28–36 CE. His birth is recorded in the Bible to Zechariah, a priest of the order of Abijah, and his wife, Elizabeth, a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Christians believe that John the Baptist had a specific role ordained by God as forerunner of Jesus, who was the foretold Messiah. The New Testament Gospels speak of this role. John’s message was addressed to all ranks and stations of Jewish society. His message was that God’s judgement on the world was imminent and that, to prepare for this judgment, the people should repent of their sins, be baptized, and produce appropriate fruits of repentance.
John’s baptism was a rite that symbolized repentance in preparation for the coming world judgment and was to be accompanied, before and afterward, by a righteous life.
Sometime after baptizing Jesus, John was imprisoned by Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee. Herod had married illegally, Herodias, the divorced wife of his half-brother. John’s denunciation of this marriage presented Herod the opportunity to get rid of John. At the request of Herodias daughter, she had him decapitated.
Jesus, who was baptized by John, saw in him the last and greatest of the prophets, the one who prepared for the coming of God’s kingdom (Mark 9, Matthew 11, Luke 7). Jesus said, “I tell you, among those born of women, there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than John the Baptist.” (Luke 7:28)
