Five / Six
Ella noticed dad’s sad tone and the way he touched the poppy pinned to his lapel. She touched her own poppy and said, “Dad, do we wear poppies because they’re the colour of blood?”
“Well, there was old soldier folklore that said poppies would grow on fields where soldiers died, watered by the blood they shed. And indeed, poppies were some of the first flowers to regrow on the devastated plains of France and Belgium. But the poppy is also a symbol of faith and respect, and is now uniformly recognised as a symbol of tribute to all fallen soldiers.”
Australia has a proud history of service and sacrifice in the major wars of modern times. This pack of seven activities will help your upper primary students to gain an understanding and appreciation of the origins of Remembrance Day, why it is held on November 11, why we no longer call it Armistice Day, and the traditions that are synonymous with remembering the fallen.
The seven activities included in the pack are:
♦ Comprehension text and foldable questions activity
♦ Adjective wreath
♦ For the Fallen poetry analysis flip book
♦ Figuring out figurative language activity
♦ Vocabulary poppy field
♦ Traditions flip book
♦ Persuading the Prime Minister writing activity templates and planning sheets.
An answer key is included to make marking a breeze!
