These item may be purchased separately in my store:

Remembrance Day Canada and the Netherlands Bundle

The Soldiers of Valour Road
Each of the two resources includes informational text about the three men who lived on Pine Street (renamed Valour Road), Winnipeg before the beginning of WWI (Leo Clarke, Frederick Hall, and Robert Shankland) and who were all awarded the Victoria Cross medal. Only Shankland survived the war. This is a great resource to use around Remembrance Day but can actually be used at any time of year, as there is no direct reference to November 11th.

Accompanying the text is a page of vocabulary and language use activities and a page of comprehension questions. At the bottom of the latter page is a short research assignment; students will need access to the internet. I have included the easiest website for them to use (on the answer key page) and the best search term to use to find it themselves.

The vocabulary and language use activities are different for the two different levels, but the comprehension and research questions are the same for both.

Also included is a page of 8 discussion or writing topics that can be assigned as group discussion or writing topics. These are the same in both resources.

Some of these or all of the discussion/writing topics might be best assigned after the reading - they can be cut up into strips to distribute among students or used as a complete page (perhaps allowing students to choose a number of topics). It can be used as an assessment tool or simply as a way to observe Remembrance Day in your classroom. Please note that the preview does not include all of the topics available in the purchased item.

AND

Canada and the Netherlands, a Special Relationship:

This is a small bundle of two resources, one designed for students in grades 5-6 and the other for students in grades 7-8. The resources are similar in content, with the texts written at different levels with different vocabulary words. Some of the comprehension questions are the same for both levels, but there are a couple of variations. The bundle would work well if you are teaching students of different levels.

Each resource includes two reading passages: the first includes background information on the Netherlands and the second describes the special relationship Canadians have with the Dutch (due to Canada giving refuge to members of the Dutch royal family during WWII and the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian soldiers in May of 1945).

There are two pre-reading activities and one post-reading activity:
1) a pre-reading survey to assess how much students already know about the Netherlands: this would be a great group/class activity but could be done individually as well. It could also be completed as a webquest but one advantage to doing it as a survey (without other sources to consult) is that students can go back later and fill in the correct answers once they have read the texts. Space has been provided on the right side of the page for jotting down their ideas before they fill in their final answers with information from the passages.

2) a list of 8 vocabulary words, four from each passage, for students to define;

3) a page of questions (assessing comprehension as well as having students to express opinions while citing evidence) is included as well.
