Renaissance Poetry Vocabulary:

Sonnet – a fourteen-line lyric poem with a single theme written in iambic pentameter
Petrarchan (or Italian) sonnet – divided into an octave (8 lines), rhyming abba abba, followed by a sestet (6 lines), rhyming cdecde or cdcdcd
Spenserian sonnet – rhyming abab bcbc cdcdee
Shakespearean (or Elizabethan or English) sonnet – divided into three quatrains (4 lines) and a couplet (2 lines) rhyming abab cdcd efef gg
Sonnet Sequence – a group of sonnets linked together by the theme, subject, or person addressed
Pastoral Poetry – lyrics that celebrate the pleasures of a simple life in the country
