This project is based on the Alberta Grade 8 Social Studies curriculum. As a culminating activity, it fosters critical thinking by asking students to choose a single word to represent the worldview of the Middle Ages, a word to represent the worldview of the Renaissance, and a word to represent the worldview of Modern-Day Canada.
Students are then to 'decorate' their words, adding images and colour that they feel represents the facts they have based their word choices on (for example, choosing the word 'limited' to represent the Middle Ages, and then adding chains holding the word to a silhouette of a cathedral, or an image of an earth-centric universe).
The second page is a follow up gallery walk where students examine the work of their peers, record the words used by others, and then choose the word for each era that they feel best embodies the worldview. This project can be easily adapted for other subjects and other grade levels.
