EXCERPT
In every Magritte painting there is an incongruity or paradox. That was Magritte’s art in a nutshell. But the biggest paradox of all that he kept going was his life. He was the only Surreal artist who led an entirely respectable bourgeois life. He was happily married, living in a comfortable, homey area of Brussels. He was so “homey” that he didn’t even bother with a studio. He just painted in a corner of the living or dining room.

All the other Surrealists lived like1960s Hippies in comparison. Yet Magritte subverted the bourgeois image and their values in every single painting of his. This made him a walking, breathing paradox every day of his life. Ditto his art.

Ironically, one way Belgium, his home country, chose to honor Magritte was by putting his image on one of its bank notes. Magritte was an alleged successful forger of both bank notes and art work. He was never arrested or prosecuted. There is no way of knowing now if it was true. Yet everyone agrees he had the ability to do it. He would love this paradox.
