After working with my students to help them understand the difference between an item that is renewable and an item that isn't renewable, I allow them to work with a partner to sort pictures into each group. This is an interactive journal activity. Before they are allowed to start sorting they have to write their own definition of each word. Once they finish the sort, on a loose leaf piece of paper I tell them to justify their sort. "Go through one picture at a time and tell me how you know it is in the correct category". After they have finished then they will do the following worksheet independently, this helps me check for understanding of their content knowledge.
