This is an Art Appreciation lesson for the painting, "Claude at the Easel" by the French Impressionist artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
The lesson includes a printable copy of the artwork, and also a link to a high quality image for classroom projection.
The main body of the lesson is a set of questions for the teacher to ask the students. (Correct answers are also included.) The questions are formulated to encourage the students to look at the painting closely enough to notice the details. The questions are designed to help them develop a mental image. This process helps them learn to appreciate fine art.
Also included are suggested activities, some of which include links to other websites for further learning related to the content or style of the painting. Some of the activities help tie in another academic subject.
A picture and few facts about the artist are included, but the lesson is about the artwork.
The art period and/or movement is labeled for your reference on the lesson plan.
The file includes pages in both landscape and portrait orientation. If you print it, select "Auto portrait/landscape" under the orientation menu of the print screen so the orientation will automatically print correctly.
Claude Monet said, “Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love.”
I hope you enjoy the lesson! I enjoyed creating it.
