The Report Writing Organizer is a note-taking sheet for students to use when researching a topic. Students can use this organizer to record notes from multiple sources.
This project is editable, so topic/subtopics can be adjusted to fit the project.
This product is versatile and can be used for a variety of activities such as:
- independent research projects
- group research projects
- whole group learning (social studies/science topic)
In my second grade classroom, my students used this organizer for their animal research projects. First, I modeled how to tag pages of books for various subtopics (physical description, food, habitat, interesting facts). Second, I modeled how to read and record important information under the various subtopics on this report writing organizer. **I ask students to write each fact/detail in 5 or less words (this encourages students to identify the most important words and discourages students from copying sentences word for word from a book). Third, I modeled how to create a paragraph for each subtopic (using a topic sentence, detail sentences, and conclusion).
There is a space for students to write their sources. These sources may be online texts, articles, or books.
