Product Description
The common core standards ask our students to represent multiplication in a variety of ways. What better way to engage their attention than to use scientific data about our solar system while solving mathematical problems?

In this product, you will find a lesson designed to guide your students through a collaborative activity where they will match different multiplication representations for four planets in our solar system. They will need to justify why each representation accurately demonstrates the information for each planet and explain what the representation is demonstrating. This activity is sure to get the academic discussions flowing in your classroom.

Product Contents:
Teacher Instructions: Including guided questions to facilitate class discussions and justifications
Planet Fact Sheet: Includes table of information, planet fun facts, and examples of the different representations that can be added to an interactive notebook.
Exit Ticket: This can be used as a formative assessment after the collaborative activity.
Printables of the representations, models, and planet pages in color or black and white versions
Answer keys for all planet pages and exit ticket

Student Objectives:
-Students will connect the different representations of multiplication to a real-world situation.
-Students will need to explain what strategies they used to make their connections and their reasoning as to why the representations make sense with the situation.


Standards Addressed:
5.NBT.7 – Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties or operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

6.NS.3 - Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.
