This resource includes a fully sequenced program of work and supporting resources (over 50 pages) for teaching a unit of work based on 'Representing Youth Culture' through the lens of the camera.

It includes a unit outline and a suggested sequence of lessons and activities (over 20 hours) with specific targeted resources.

In addition to a user friendly, purposeful study guide to engage students while watching the film 'The Breakfast Club', this resource now includes viewing guides suitable for
watching the feature film 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', viewing an episode of the
Australian teen comedy 'Summer Heights High' and viewing a skit (10 minutes long) based on the UK's BBC 80s comedy, 'Kevin's Guide to Being a Teenager.'

The rationale for this unit is outlined in the program extracted below.
Specifically, by studying texts (in particular film texts) drawn from popular youth culture, students will develop skills in responding and composing and learn about the ways:
bias, stereotypes, perspectives and ideologies are constructed and communicated in film and multimedia texts.

Through consideration of elements such as: script, story lines, sustained perspective, settings, casting, costuming, camera techniques storyboarding and other visual and aural components specific to film-making, students will also consolidate prior learning about the ways in which film-makers transform concepts into film and apply their understanding to consider how those constructions can be manipulated to explore universal themes and social realities: including present cultures, popular culture and youth cultures.

Additionally, by composing their own texts (feature articles, reviews and multimedia texts) and through engagement with scriptwriting, storyboarding, importing data from the internet and manipulating images, it is intended that students will also consolidate their understanding of the ways composers, deploy processes of representation to communicate ideas.

Through the process of creating their own cohesive texts, it is intended that students will reinforce their understanding of the ways language, image and sound can be manipulated to communicate meaning.
