Product Description
Try out speed reading. Disprove spell-check. Debate handwriting vs. typing. Find out what kind of writer you are.

Ready to challenge or engage your students with REAL action research on topics they care about? These topics could change students’ lives, including their confidence levels and how they feel about English class. Use this collection of activities (“experiments”) to get students involved in original inquiry!

These activities are NOT formal experiments and lab reports, but they mimic the scientific process of gathering background knowledge, identifying opinions or hypotheses, taking steps to “experiment” with the topic in some way, and reflecting on the results.

All activities VARY in their exact steps, so students will not get bored even if you do all 4 of them! The tasks include reading articles, doing in-class discussions, designing an experiment, conducting pre-made experiments, and writing reactions. Writing includes argumentative and persuasive and varies in length and structure (i.e. half page response to actual essays, open-ended vs. specific prompts).

This EDITABLE 28-page download includes 3 items sold separately AND pages not sold elsewhere:

Does Speed Reading Work? (5 pages) – Students use free websites that supposedly teach you how to speed read and decide if they work

Does Spell-Check Really Work? (8 pages) – Students insert text into different kinds of free proofreading software to decide if they are sufficient in catching errors (and therefore whether or not it’s important for students to learn grammar!)

Is it Better to Type or Handwrite? (7 pages) – Students read about the pros and cons of handwriting vs. typing , design an experiment to “prove” the value of one over the other, participate in a class discussion, and draw a conclusion

Can the internet make you a better writer? (4 pages) – Students insert their own writing into different analysis websites to observe trends in BOTH errors they make AND what their personal writing style is like (in order to decide if their writing should change)

TEACHER’S GUIDE (4 pages) – Tips for implementation, including a list of 40+ ways to differentiate the projects and make them specific to EITHER middle or high school

Some of the CCSS standards accomplished include: W.1, W.2, W.7, and W.10, along with SL.1. (Reading Informational Text standards could also be assessed easily.)
