Provide an organized system for students to keep up with their notes and reinforce the vocabulary and skills of the research process.
How to Use This Resource
There are two main ways you could use this research folder in your class.
★ It can be a year-long ongoing tool for generating and exploring research questions independently. In this case, students would add not-necessarily-related questions to their folder whenever they are curious about a topic and research them either during dedicated research time, like Genius Hour, or in free time. ★ It can be a focused lesson to initiate a whole class research project. In this situation, I recommend having students use the note card pockets to organize their notes and questions into subtopics (or reasons for an argumentative paper). That makes it easier for them to see at a glance if they are lacking information in a particular area. We use post-its to label these pockets so they can be changed for different mini-research projects.
★ This resource DOES NOT include instructions for composing a written research paper.
★ I introduce MLA format for citation to my students before using this resource. Although the flipbooks provide an overview of the most common types of sources we use, they don’t go into detailed instruction.
Materials You Will Need
★ File folders
I recommend using manila folders (one per student) to create these mini-workspaces; it makes the research process seem like something really special! The illustration and instructions on page 4 are for a lapbook-style fold, which creates a mini office that students can stand on their desks. If you prefer, you could also just glue the pieces of this set into a folder without that extra step of folding the sides in. You could even skip the manila folder completely and glue the pieces into an interactive notebook.
Use cardstock to print pages 9 – 10 (one copy per student) to make the notecard pockets more durable and reuse your folders throughout the year.
I strongly recommend using white school glue to assemble the pockets and to affix the front labels. Pieces assembled with glue sticks may peel and fall off within days. Since they are located along the top edge of the folder, the notes and flipbooks could be stapled into the folder, rather than glued, if you want to save a little time.
